Dog Skin Problems

Your dog’s skin is the largest organ on his or her body. This makes for a lot of room for things to go wrong. Fortunately, many dog skin conditions can be treated successfully by our veterinarian, Dr. Cundiff. At Hartland Park Animal Hospital in Lexington, we would like to look at the most common problems that could affect your dog’s skin.

Allergies

One of the most common ways that dogs show they are allergic to something is by having terribly itchy skin. Dogs can be itchy all over, or just in a few places. They tend to scratch these places bald or open the skin. Other symptoms of allergies include chronic ear infections, red skin, diarrhea, vomiting, sneezing, coughing, runny eyes or nose, and becoming more aggressive or hyperactive.

Acute Moist Dermatitis

Your dog’s skin may become so itchy and irritated that sores appear and do not close. Usually called hot spots, they are caused by allergies, insect bites, arthritis, and other problems that result in the dog being unable to stay clean. Some dogs also get them due to boredom. They can often be treated, but tend to recur throughout a dog’s life.

Ringworm

Centuries ago, it was thought that this skin condition was caused by a worm. Although we now know it’s caused by a fungal infection, the name has stuck. This causes large bald patches with a characteristic red ring around the edge. Although it can be cleared up with medication, ringworm in your dog is contagious to other pets and people as well.

Parasites

Many parasites can cause problems with your dog’s skin, especially fleas and mites that cause mange. These parasites are all treatable with medication from your veterinarian. You need to clean your home to make sure that you kill all of the parasites. You can prevent fleas and ticks with oral tablets or spot-on treatments from your veterinarian.
